They are the famous “worst food ever” when you’re a kid. Most kids, anyway. I can say for certain I never had the experience as a child because my mother recently thought brussel sprouts were kohlrabi…Hi Mom! There are ways to make brussel sprouts taste good, believe it or not.
Why do we hate brussel sprouts?
- They are green and don’t taste like sugar
- They are overcooked
- They are frozen from a bag
- They were picked too early
But really they can taste good! So why eat them? This is why:
- Vitamin K
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin A
- Folate
- Manganese
- Potassium
- Vitamin B16
- Iron
- Omega 3 fatty acids
Make Brussel Sprouts Taste Good
We can make brussel sprouts taste good when prepared correctly to get benefit from all their nutrients. Brussel sprouts are in season now and filled with nutritious vitamins. You can find them at the farmers market on big stalks or in the grocery store by the produce. They are particularly full of vitamin K and vitamin C. Vitamin K is great for blood clotting and helping vitamin D to use calcium in our body for strong bones. Vitamin C helps heal our tissues when we are injured and provide antioxidants to help us through sickness.
My favorite way to make brussel sprouts taste good is to roast them. Alternatively, they could be steamed for 5-10 minutes without overcooking.
Roasting Brussel Sprouts
- Set oven to 400 degrees
- Cut core ends of brussel sprouts
- Peel loose leaves and discard
- Half the sprouts
5. Place in pan to roast with butter (or olive oil), salt, and pepper
6. Roast for 30 minutes or so, turning every so often (They will be softer and slightly browned)
Enjoy as a nutritious side with your favorite meal or add to a salad!
* Update: Definitely try out the air fryer for this one! Cook them until they look good, I’d say.
Fresh Flavors: To make brussel sprouts taste good, roast them and gain all the nutritious benefits.
